Here we are, the night before the crowning. I have been predicting that Bianca del Rio would take the crown since episode 3. I still agree with that prediction. However, I was convinced that Joslyn Fox would win Miss Congeniality since episode 5. While I think she deserves it and has campaigned well for the title, I predict that BenDeLaCreme will get Miss Congeniality since she has almost twice as many Twitter followers (28,000) as Joslyn (15,100), has been in 4th place since the Snatch Game, and because RuPaul opened up the voting right after DeLa’s elimination. I could be wrong – people could vote based on who is actually the nicest instead of who is the most popular. (And I do think DeLa is nice, but it’s not her trademark the way it is for Joslyn.)
In the hashtag race, #teambianca is beating #teamadore by a narrow margin. And Courtney Act is not really in the running. The pink bar shows their rankings after episode 12. The fervor appears to be dying down after Episode 13, although I did not run these numbers until Sunday, May 18th. Perhaps people know that Ru has made his decision and their voting has less of an impact.
I was curious to see how this episode would impact queens’ twitter numbers since Ru reminisced about long lost friends such as ViVacious and Kelly Mantle. If you have been reading my blog (Thanks, Chad Michael) then you know that an elimination gives a queen a small spike in Twitter followers and then her growth rate decreases after subsequent episodes, likely due to less screen time. Digging deeper into the numbers, you will see that this episode does not do much to rekindle our love for past contenders. Each queen’s relative increase in followers is paltry compared to other episodes.
The rankings have held fairly steady since episode 9, but there was one change in the rankings after this episode. April Carrion and Gia Gunn are no longer tied for 8th place. April holds 8th place with 100 more followers than G-G-G-Gia.
Increase in Twitter Followers (#)
Bianca (4,300) and Adore (3,800) got the most new followers. Courtney Act is doing well (2,200), but is not in the same league as the other two finalists.
BenDeLaCreme (1,200), Joslyn Fox (1,000) and Milk (900) are still seeing good growth.
The rest of the queens are seeing less than 600 new followers.
Laganja has gained the fewest followers this episode (149). I predict that she will have a cult following within a couple of years. That prediction has nothing to do with numbers. Just a gut feeling that Mama Alyssa Edwards will give her some publicity guidance.
Increase in Twitter Followers (%)
Bianca del Rio (9%), Adore Delano (8%) and Joslyn Fox (7%) have the highest relative increase in Twitter followers this episode. Normally a 9% increase is fairly unimpressive, but there was nothing new in this episode and a chance of conversion is unlikely.
Laganja saw the smallest relative increase in followers (2%).
Kelly Mantle and Magnolia Crawford, the first queens to be eliminated, increased followers by 3%.
The rankings are unchanged after this week’s episode. Bianca is in the lead. Adore is highly popular and close behind. People don’t care that much about Courtney and Darienne.
This episode continues the story of Bianca and Adore, and I suspect it was edited to make Adore look like a viable contender for the crown. Everybody knows that Bianca is going to win, so they need to give it a sense of competition. It worked. Bianca and Adore each gained more than 6,000 followers. The fans are making their lack of enthusiasm for Courtney loud and clear. Although she is highly talented, nobody is very interested.
RuPaul’s Hashtag Race
I used RiteTag to find out how many tweets per hour the top 3 queens are receiving. The story of hashtags is consistent with the story of the number of fans. #teambianca appears more frequently (139.04 per hour) than #teamadore (128.80 per hour) and #teamcourtney (10.31).
Many queens get an elimination spike. This episode’s edits were a lot nicer to Darienne (She was kicked out of her home, Courtney thought she did the best in the challenges, etc.). It didn’t make a difference. Darienne’s best episodes were in the beginning. She saw a 6% increase in followers this episode, which is par for the course. Her biggest spike was after Shade: The Rusical (15%).
Logo TV launched the voting process for Miss Congeniality right after DeLa’s elimination. (Hmmm…) DeLa and Joslyn are all still gaining a hearty number of followers. My gut says that DeLa will get Miss Congeniality since a) people were pissed off about her elimination and b) she has the 4th highest number of fans. Joslyn has campaigned fairly heavily for the title. I wish both of them could win!
And Now, The Numbers…
Rankings remain unchanged. Darienne is the 7th most popular queen, behind BenDeLaCreme, Milk, and Joslyn.
April Carrion and Gia Gunn have the same number of Twitter followers.
Bianca is in the lead with 50,200 followers
Adore Delano is in second place with 45,700 followers. I can no longer blame her American Idol advantage. She has gained 33,000 followers over the course of the show.
Courtney Act has 38,700 followers
Increase in Followers
Bianca del Rio gained 6,900 new followers, and Adore Delano gained 6,500 new followers. No other queen can compare to these two.
Relative Increase in Followers
Adore Delano shined in this episode. She gained the highest relative number of followers (17%).
Bianca del Rio gained 16% new followers.
BenDeLaCreme and Joslyn Fox (arguably the top contenders for Miss Congeniality) each gained 9% new followers.
I woke up in the middle of the night after watching episode 11 and felt like someone broke up with me. BenDeLaCreme didn’t make the top three, and many of us were stunned. If you are looking for a fair assessment of the episode in order to justify your anger, read Eric Rezsnyak’s recap in the Rochester City Newspaper. (Read Rezsnyak’s recaps in general. They’re up there with the AV Club recaps.) I’m a biased Seattleite, but seriously. How can you not love this face? RuPaul, I adore you, but what in heaven’s name were you thinking?
Now that DeLa is out of the picture, there is less suspense about who the winner will be. Can Courtney, Adore, or Darienne really beat out Bianca del Rio? Yeah. Whatever.
When a queen is eliminated, she tends to get a bump in the relative number of fans. This week, DeLa increased followers by 11%, which is higher than any other queen. 11% is still low compared to her other gains this season (28% after the Rusical episode). In general, I think that people have chosen their favorites and are just waiting for the finale. Bianca still leads the pack. Adore is still doing well. People are losing interest in Courtney Act. Darienne Lake still has the same number of fans as the eliminated (read: forgotten) queens.
And now, the numbers…
Bianca del Rio has the most followers (43,300) and the highest increase in followers (3,700).
Adore Delano is in 2nd place, both in total number of followers (39,200) and increase in followers (3,500).
Courtney Act is in 3rd place, with 36,200 followers, but only 1,500 new followers.
BenDeLaCreme is in 4th place, with 24,500 followers, increasing by 2,400 followers since last week.
Darienne is still in 7th place. You know, because she has those amazing runway looks.
April Carrion and Gia Gunn are tied for 8th place.
Increase in Followers (#)
Bianca (3,700) and Adore (3,500) gained the most followers this week.
BenDeLaCreme (2,400) performed better than Courtney Act (1,500).
Joslyn, Milk, Trinity, Darienne, and Gia all gained about 600-800 new followers.
Vivacious, Kelly, Magnolia and Laganja gained less than 500 new followers.
Increase in Followers (%)
Normally Bianca del Rio has the highest relative increase in followers. Not today. DeLa’s elimination likely inspired people to follow her on social media now that she won’t be a regular part of our lives. She increased followers by 11%.
Adore (10%) and Bianca (9%) are also seeing a substantial relative increase in followers, but Courtney has only gained a 4% increase.
