Season 7, Episode 6: Ru Hollywood Stories

Hello, Gay Sports Fans! Welcome to a pleasantly more predictable week on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Kandy Ho went home after her third LSFYL, Jaidynn got some screen time and extra love from the fans, and Katya freaking won a challenge!

There has been a lot of talk about Millennials this year. Why are they doing so well? Why do we love them? After the social media summary below, you’ll find some graphs illustrating the correlation between age and social media followers. Spoiler: there isn’t one.

This week’s social media star is Jaidynn Diore Fierce. A coming out story, a teary eyed session about her hand-sewn costume (with sympathy from Violet!), and winning LSFYL. She got more screen time and a nice spike in followers on Facebook. Hugs all around, people.

Kandy Ho did not get an elimination spike, likely because fans expected her to go home. She’s a lovely human being, but not extremely popular. Therefore, there wasn’t the resounding outrage and social media activity that we get with highly popular queens like Trixie.

I expected Katya to gain more followers than usual this week. While she is still doing well, I don’t see any big spikes.

Twitter

  • Pearl is still in the lead with 26,500 followers, very closely mirroring Bianca’s growth curve from last year. Not only has she seen steep growth, but it will be hard to beat her totals. She gained 3,000 followers this week (13%).
  • Miss Fame continues to do well, with 22,400 followers, gaining 1,800-1,900 each week. She’s pretty AND weird! Winning combo for this show. Maybe she’s growing on me. Maybe.
  • Katya acquired an impressive 2,200 new followers (13%), bringing her total to 19,100. While her win likely helped, she has gained between 2,000 and 2,300 new followers for the past three episodes.
  • Jaidynn Diore Fierce has the highest relative increase in followers (14% – 843 new followers), due to increased screen time and heartwarming story.
  • Mrs. Kasha and Jaidynn have moved up in rank (to #9 and #10, respectively) with Kandy Ho moving down from #9 to #11. However, the difference between these queens is miniscule: 7,076; 7,053; and 6,717 followers, respectively. We will likely see a lot more shifting among these three.

Facebook

I want to take a moment to talk about how confusing Facebook’s numbers are. First of all, some queens have Profiles and some have Pages, so I need to make sure I’m reporting on the right page each week. That’s why Katya and Ginger’s numbers are way off in Episode 2. If you care enough to learn about the difference between Pages and Profiles, read this article.

But then, the numbers that I get during search are different from the numbers I see on their full pages. Look below. I typed in Jaidynn’s name and saw 7,685 likes. Then I opened up her page and saw 9,959 likes. I’m sure the number is cached in search, but jeez. These inconsistencies make me question my numbers.

Search screen for Facebook: 7,685 likes!

Look at Jaidynn’s page! 9,959! Big difference, people!
  • Speaking of Jaidynn, holy smokes! Look at that Episode 6 spike. She normally gains about 200-700 followers per week. She gained 2,934, which is 43%! She also jumped from #12 to #10.
  • Mrs. Kasha Davis and Kandy Ho have moved down in ranking, from #10 to #11, and from #11 to #12, respectively.
  • Miss Fame is still in the lead with 37,729 followers, but Pearl is gaining on her quickly and will likely be first place within the next couple of episodes. Pearl gained 4,937 new Facebook followers (17%).
  • While Violet gains about 1,500 new followers each episode, she gained 2,790 this week. Showing her softer side piqued fans’ interest.
  • Katya has gained significantly more followers each week over the past four episodes. This week’s win and extra screen time gave her 2,867 new followers (19%).
  • Max has gained 20% more followers this week (3,324). She is doing consistently well in the popularity race, and might pass Trixie in the next episode.
  • To put this in perspective, Kennedy Davenport has a vibrant social media presence, but has only gained 100-300 followers each week. This week, her stellar runway look gained her 209 more followers (3%).

  • Miss Fame is still aHEAD in Instagram land. See what I did there?
  • Pearl is gaining on Miss Fame. I predict that she will oust Miss Fame from the #1 seat after next week’s episode.
  • Violet Chachki did significantly better than usual this week. She tends to gain about 5,000-6,000 new followers. This week, she gained 10,100 (17%).
  • Max and Trixie swapped places. Max gained 7,400 new followers (16%) and is now in 4th place. Trixie gained 4,000 new followers (8%) and is in 5th place.
  • Jaidynn gained 2,000 new followers (16%), knocking Tempest down to position #10.
  • Kennedy’s numbers are closely aligned with eliminated queens. Foreshadowing?

Millennials’ Advantage?

Word on the street is that the younguns are getting a lot more followers. This is in sharp contrast to Season 6, which was dominated by Bianca and Courtney. I ran a quick test to see if there is a relationship between age and number of followers. As you can see from the highly wackadoodle graphs below, there is not a strong relationship between age and followers. Yes, those above the age of 34 don’t do as well, but Jaidynn and Kandy don’t do so great either.

For those not statistically inclined, an R-squared of 0.24 is really low. A healthy correlation would have an R-squared of at least 0.7 or 0.8, but really would need to be closer to 0.9. To those of you who are statistically inclined, I don’t mean to offend you. Feel free to make comments about my stats explanation. But do it nicely. 🙂

Season 7, Episode 5: The DESPY Awards (with C.U.N.T. survey results!)

Screen Shot 2015-04-04 at 12.13.49 AM

Here we are at Episode 5. I don’t have much to crow about. The most interesting thing about this week’s social media stats is that very little has changed. Mrs. Kasha Davis got some love after she flew the coop. Although Pearl’s behavior ruffled some feathers, she still saw amazing fan growth. But the rankings seem to be becoming more fixed. If the Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook rankings are to predict the top 3, it will be Pearl, Miss Fame and either Violet or Katya. It’s only episode 5, so don’t count all your chickens before they are hatched.

This week, I also asked RPDR Redditors to take a poll and evaluate the queens’ Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent. I was hoping for 20 responses, but Lordy! Y’all are more obsessed with this show than I am! I got 930 responses. The survey results appear below the social media summary. I’m more inclined to use the survey results to predict the top 3: Katya, Max, and Violet. In fact, Katya scored so well on all four categories, that she should probably be America’s Next Drag Superstar. If only she had more screen time. (Jesus.)

Let’s take a look at the rankings from this time last year: Season 6, Episode 5 (which was the Snatch Game). The top 3 Twitter rankings were Courtney, Adore, and Bianca. However, Bianca was #3 and Courtney was #1. Things still have plenty of time to shift around, especially after the Snatch Game.

S6E5 Followers Total

I’ll be so bold as to make this prediction. The top 3 will NOT include Kandy, Kennedy, Jaidynn, and Ginger. I have a feeling no one is shocked about Kandy, Kennedy and Jaidynn (and gosh, I really do think Jaidynn is adorable), but Ginger is a little surprising. She’s not only doing kinda meh in the social media race, but her C.U.N.T. ratings were middle of the road. Who knows, though. As Mrs. Kasha Davis said in her Advocate article, “The reality show business is one that Ginger Minj is obviously playing well, in that she gives them what they want and it’s aired!”

Twitter

  • There is not a lot of change in the pecking order. One exception: Mrs. Kasha Davis moved up to #10, and Jaidynn moved down to #11.
  • Growth is slow this week. Ginger has the most relative growth (14%), closely followed by Mrs. Kasha, Katya, Trixie, and Violet (13%).
  • If Twitter were to decide the top 3, it would be Pearl, Miss Fame, and Katya. (Trixie beats Katya, but she doesn’t count since she is eliminated.)

  • Mrs. Kasha Davis has a nice elimination spike. She has historically gained about 5-7% new followers each week. This week, she gained 18% new followers.
  • Pearl had the most growth this week (23%), with Ginger closely behind (21%).
  • Max, Trixie, Mrs. Kasha, and Katya all had strong growth, between 18% – 19%.

C.U.N.T. Survey

Thanks to everyone who filled out the survey. Below are the average results for each queen, as well as standard deviation, which is color coded. (I won’t get into the definition of standard deviation, but it’s basically a measure of the amount of variation in responses. For example, if everyone gave Katya a 10 in charisma, the standard deviation would be 0, because there is no variation in responses.)

It was not only fun to see how the numbers panned out, but also to see the subsequent discussion on Reddit. Here is one of my favorite quotes from /u/deathcabscutie, who tried very hard to differentiate between liking a queen and objectively rating her C.U.N.T.:

“I’m surprised by how seriously I’m taking this. I’m talking my way through each queen because I want to be fair, and I’m only halfway through uniqueness after at least 5 minutes working on this. I’m trying to separate my feelings about how much I like a queen from how much I think they exemplify each category.

“For instance, I didn’t really love Jasmine Masters by the time she was eliminated, but I gave her REALLY high marks for charisma because in the first episode she was the queen who most seemed to grab everyone’s attention with her infectious energy. EVERYONE was talking about her with stunned surprise at how much of an impression she made on them. I mean, literally the day before almost everyone was writing her off as basically not deserving of being cast.”

Total Score

  • Katya got the highest total score, as she scored between 8.0-9.0 average for each category.
  • Max is second place, with her highest score in uniqueness (9.2 average), and her lowest in nerve (7.2).
  • Trixie takes third place, with her highest score in uniqueness (9.0), and her lowest in nerve (7.5).
  • Violet is in fourth place, with her highest score in nerve (8.9), and her lowest score in charisma (6.4).

Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 9.35.12 PM

Charisma

  • Katya, Trixie, and Max have the highest scores in charisma.
  • Katya also has the lowest standard deviation (1.6), which means there is the least amount of variation in votes.
  • The highest variation was in Tempest and Jasmine. I have a feeling Tempest’s is high because we didn’t get to know her, and Jasmine’s is high because she has been polarizing.

Charisma Graph

Uniqueness

  • Max got the highest average score (9.2), and the lowest standard deviation (1.6).
  • Trixie’s score was very close to Max’s: 9.0 with 1.7 standard deviation.
  • Kennedy, Jasmine, and Kandy score the lowest in uniqueness (3.2-4.0).

Uniqueness Graph

Nerve

  • Violet scored highest in nerve (8.9), also with the lowest standard deviation (1.8).
  • Katya still kicks @$$ (8.2 average, 1.8 STDEV)
  • Pearl scored high on nerve (8.0), but also has one of the highest standard deviations (2.3). Redditor /u/romaselli helps me understand why there might be more variability for her: “I was going to… give Pearl (and Jasmine) high marks for nerve, but I thought about it some more and ultimately decided to flip it around, and gave them both very low marks. Yes they had the nerve to talk back to Ru and to not take criticism well, but I don’t think thats what the Nerve in C.U.N.T. is about, but more about going all-in in a challenge that may be totally out of your comfort zone, and not buckling under the pressure of the competition. For that I gave Jaydinn, Kasha and Ginger a good nerve ranking.”

Talent

  • Katya scored highest in talent (8.8), also with the lowest standard deviation (1.6).
  • Max is a close second: 8.7 average, 1.8 STDEV.
  • Violet got strong scores for talent, which makes me happy. I think that grumpy introvert works hard: 8.5 average, 1.9 STDEV.

Q: What happens on social media when everyone disagrees with RuPaul’s decision?

A: Elimination Spike!

Last year, the Twitter rankings mostly lined up with the order of elimination. Magnolia Crawford, Kelly Mantle and Vivacious were at the bottom. Bianca, Adore, and Courtney were at the top. There was one glaring exception: Darienne, who was outranked by DeLa, Milk, and Joslyn. Because duh.

I mention this because DeLa had a nice (11%) elimination spike (2,400 new followers) when she was kicked off, which was a great relative increase for Season 6. Everyone was pissed at Ru and followed DeLa on Twitter to show support.

S6E13 Total graph
S6E13 Twitter Followers

However, Trixie’s spike blows DeLa’s numbers out of the water, with a 33% increase in Twitter followers, the highest I have seen so far. (For comparison, the highest relative increase in followers for Season 6 was Bianca del Rio, who saw a 31% increase after the Queens of Comedy challenge.) She got the most new followers on Twitter, gained 25% more fans on Facebook, and 22% more on Instagram. More details below.

Pearl did incredibly well, too. She is still the #1 rank on Twitter, and #2 on Facebook and Instagram. Miss Fame still has the most fans on Facebook and Instagram, but Pearl is gaining on her quickly.

Jaidynn’s successes this week have helped her out in the social media race. She moved from #11 to #10 on Twitter, from #13 to #12 on Facebook, and from #11 to #10 on Instagram. I would love to see what would have happened if she had gotten as much screen time as Miss Fame, especially that part where she sewed that Bianca dress in 30 minutes. (Jesus, why does Miss Fame get so much attention?! Why am I giving it to her right now?)

Kennedy got some redemption this week with her win, and quite a few kudos on Twitter, but she remains in the bottom four on all three platforms. She got 552 new Twitter followers (12%), 335 new Facebook followers (5%), and 561 new followers on Instagram (6%).

Twitter

  • Trixie elimination spike: She got the most new followers on Twitter (4,100; 33%). She climbed from the #4 spot to #3, pushing Katya down a notch.
  • Pearl still holds the top ranking. She gained 4,000 new followers (24%).
  • Miss Fame holds spot #2, but has only gained 11% more followers.
  • Katya and Max gained about 2,300 new followers each. Max saw a high relative increase (25%).
  • Violet, Ginger Minj and Katya continue to show steady growth in the high teens (17% – 18%).
  • Sasha dropped from #10 to #12, boosting the rankings for Jaidynn (#11 to #10) and Mrs. Kasha Davis (#12 to #11).

I don’t know what to think about Facebook. Twitter gives me crazy #justicefortrixie conversations, Instagram gives me pretty photo and video recaps, and Facebook algorithms hide anything interesting on Facebook. But here goes…

  • Trixie Elimination Spike: On Facebook, she gained 2,890 new followers (25%), second in line to Pearl, who gained 4,465 Facebook followers (23%).
  • Miss Fame leads the pack. Because she is such a good leader.
  • Pearl and Violet switched places. Pearl is now #2, and Violet is now #3.
  • Max gained 2,014 new followers (17%).
  • Jaidynn Fierce and Mrs. Kasha Davis switched places. Jaidynn is now #12 and MKD is now #13.
  • It’s just kind of weird that Katya and Miss Fame each gained 1,238 new followers. Cosmic tan mom connection.

Season 7, Episode 3: ShakesQueer

Max

Hello, Squirrel Friends! It’s episode 3, and almost all the queens have developed a story arc, with the exception of Jaidynn and Katya. A lot of screen time was devoted to Max (winner!), Kennedy, Jasmine, and Violet. Max and Violet benefited from the screen time, but Kennedy and Jasmine didn’t fare so well in the social media race.

Max got a great edit this week, and social media reflects that fact. At first, the fake British accent annoyed me, but this week I saw talent, style and congeniality. She is winning me over.

What’s really interesting this week are Pearl’s numbers. She now holds the #1 spot on Twitter, saw a strong relative increase on Facebook (12%) and gained 10,000 new followers on Twitter (16%). While her performance sucked, it sucked in a crush-worthy, authentic, stoner kid kinda way. “Someone bring me a puppy. I want to die.” Can I get an amen?

Katya is doing well, but her story arc has still not been well developed. We know she’s got good style (oh, Baberaham!), her private interviews are dramatic and cute, and she keeps a low profile during Untucked. In Season 5, we didn’t get much Jinkx until the Coco-Alyssa debacle died down. I’m excited to see what happens with Katya now that Jasmine can’t make as much noise.

What other trends do you notice?

Twitter

  • Pearl has bypassed Miss Fame this week, and now holds the #1 spot on Twitter. She gained 2,300 followers this week, a 16% increase in followers.
  • Max saw the largest relative increase, with 23% more followers (1,699 new adds).
  • Ginger Minj continues to show strong growth, at 19% (1,305 new followers). As Eric Rezsnyak notes in his Episode 3 recap, she is getting the winner’s edit.
  • Kennedy Davenport and Jasmine Masters have swapped spots #13 and #14. Jasmine is now on the bottom. More camera time does not always mean more followers.
  • Tempest is still in position number 8, but is now showing 8% increase in followers. She is doing better than Sasha and Jasmine, and I have noticed Redditors wish she could have stuck around longer.

  • Trixie Mattel and Max went up in ranking. Trixie moved from #5 to #4, and Max moved from #7 to #5.
  • Tempest went down in ranking, from #4 to #7.
  • Max and Pearl saw the same relative increase in followers: 12%. However, Pearl has twice as many new fans (2,037 vs 1,260)

Season 7, Episode 2: Glamazonian Airways

Ginger-Minj-Rupauls-Drag-race-Season-7-ruvealIt’s episode 2 and we are warming up to our new set of queens! I’m pretty excited that Ginger Minj won this one, and her social media following showed a strong increase on all three platforms. I asked for more screen time with her lovely face, and my fairy godmother (Ru) granted my wish!

Normally, I see an extra spike in followers for an eliminated queen immediately after her final episode. While I was too late to track it, I think Tempest got a lot of followers on her social media channels after her elimination. I love this phenomenon. The community gives a little nudge of support on her farewell. However, Sasha didn’t get that usual spike. I’m afraid she’s going to see the same flat performance that Magnolia Crawford saw last year.

At this point in time, the percent increase means more than the total numbers. Last year, Adore Delano saw high relative increases until she was practically on par with Courtney Act’s numbers. Bianca almost always had a 20%+ increase.

What else do you notice? Add your thoughts in the comments section.

I misspelled Jaidynn’s name on my graphs this week. Forgive me, Jaidynn! I would correct it, but I gotta publish this post and make guacamole today.

Twitter

  • Jaidynn and Mrs. Kasha have gone up in ranking. Jaidynn moved from 12 to 11, Mrs. Kasha moved from 13 to 12.
  • It looks like Jasmine Masters recently lifted the privacy settings on her Twitter page. She also had a pretty stellar lip sync performance this week. However, she went down in ranking from #12 to #13. Her ranking may be due to her shady Untucked behavior.
  • Ginger Minj saw a 28% increase in followers due to her win on episode 2!
  • Pearl had a 26% increase in followers. The exchange between Ginger and Pearl on Untucked was pretty adorable. (Don’t form an alliance, don’t form an alliance. Okay, maybe you should. You two are kinda cute together.)

First of all, don’t trust these numbers. Facebook is a little confusing, because some queens have friends and followers. I think I tracked friends on Katya and Ginger Minj after episode 1. Numbers should be more accurate from this point on.

  • Miss Fame, Violet and Pearl lead the pack.
  • Tempest, Trixie, Katya, Max, and Jasmine have more than 10,000 followers.
  • Tempest had a very small increase in followers this week (3%), characteristic of an already eliminated queen.
  • If my numbers are correct, Katya had a 211% increase in followers and Ginger Minj had a 58% increase. However, I think these numbers are wrong.

Season 7, Episode 1: Born Naked

Hi Nerdy Drag Racers! I wasn’t sure if I was going to track RPDR social media this year, but someone named Feathers McGraw asked me if I was going to analyze season 7. Since I have one fan, I said YES!

Last year, Twitter did a great job of predicting the winner. However, we all knew Bianca was going to win since episode 1. This year, the winner seems a little less obvious. I’m adding in Facebook and Instagram for kicks.

Miss Fame is the Courtney Act of Season 7. She has a bazillion followers already. What makes her special? Hopefully I’ll find out soon. Right now, I just pray for more Ginger Minj screen time. That lady is SPECIAL!!

P.S. I’m working on making my graphs prettier. That might happen this season.

Here’s our baseline:

Twitter

  • Miss Fame and Pearl start out with more than 10K followers.
  • Katya, Trixie, Violet, Max, Ginger Minj, and Tempest have more than 5K followers.
  • Jasmine’s Twitter page is set to private. Girl! Did Ru teach you nothing?! How is he going to make any money if you aren’t tweeting to the masses?!

Season 6 Episode 13: Countdown to the Crown

Here we are, the night before the crowning. I have been predicting that Bianca del Rio would take the crown since episode 3. I still agree with that prediction. However, I was convinced that Joslyn Fox would win Miss Congeniality since episode 5. While I think she deserves it and has campaigned well for the title, I predict that BenDeLaCreme will get Miss Congeniality since she has almost twice as many Twitter followers (28,000) as Joslyn (15,100), has been in 4th place since the Snatch Game, and because RuPaul opened up the voting right after DeLa’s elimination. I could be wrong – people could vote based on who is actually the nicest instead of who is the most popular. (And I do think DeLa is nice, but it’s not her trademark the way it is for Joslyn.)

In the hashtag race, #teambianca is beating #teamadore by a narrow margin. And Courtney Act is not really in the running. The pink bar shows their rankings after episode 12. The fervor appears to be dying down after Episode 13, although I did not run these numbers until Sunday, May 18th. Perhaps people know that Ru has made his decision and their voting has less of an impact.

I was curious to see how this episode would impact queens’ twitter numbers since Ru reminisced about long lost friends such as ViVacious and Kelly Mantle. If you have been reading my blog (Thanks, Chad Michael) then you know that an elimination gives a queen a small spike in Twitter followers and then her growth rate decreases after subsequent episodes, likely due to less screen time. Digging deeper into the numbers, you will see that this episode does not do much to rekindle our love for past contenders. Each queen’s relative increase in followers is paltry compared to other episodes.

Rankings

The rankings have held fairly steady since episode 9, but there was one change in the rankings after this episode. April Carrion and Gia Gunn are no longer tied for 8th place. April holds 8th place with 100 more followers than G-G-G-Gia.

Increase in Twitter Followers (#)

  • Bianca (4,300) and Adore (3,800) got the most new followers. Courtney Act is doing well (2,200), but is not in the same league as the other two finalists.
  • BenDeLaCreme (1,200), Joslyn Fox (1,000) and Milk (900) are still seeing good growth.
  • The rest of the queens are seeing less than 600 new followers.
  • Laganja has gained the fewest followers this episode (149). I predict that she will have a cult following within a couple of years. That prediction has nothing to do with numbers. Just a gut feeling that Mama Alyssa Edwards will give her some publicity guidance.

Increase in Twitter Followers (%)

  • Bianca del Rio (9%), Adore Delano (8%) and Joslyn Fox (7%) have the highest relative increase in Twitter followers this episode. Normally a 9% increase is fairly unimpressive, but there was nothing new in this episode and a chance of conversion is unlikely.
  • Laganja saw the smallest relative increase in followers (2%).
  • Kelly Mantle and Magnolia Crawford, the first queens to be eliminated, increased followers by 3%.
