Season 7, Episode 1: Born Naked

Hi Nerdy Drag Racers! I wasn’t sure if I was going to track RPDR social media this year, but someone named Feathers McGraw asked me if I was going to analyze season 7. Since I have one fan, I said YES!

Last year, Twitter did a great job of predicting the winner. However, we all knew Bianca was going to win since episode 1. This year, the winner seems a little less obvious. I’m adding in Facebook and Instagram for kicks.

Miss Fame is the Courtney Act of Season 7. She has a bazillion followers already. What makes her special? Hopefully I’ll find out soon. Right now, I just pray for more Ginger Minj screen time. That lady is SPECIAL!!

P.S. I’m working on making my graphs prettier. That might happen this season.

Here’s our baseline:

  • Miss Fame and Pearl start out with more than 10K followers.
  • Katya, Trixie, Violet, Max, Ginger Minj, and Tempest have more than 5K followers.
  • Jasmine’s Twitter page is set to private. Girl! Did Ru teach you nothing?! How is he going to make any money if you aren’t tweeting to the masses?!

Season 6 Episode 13: Countdown to the Crown

Here we are, the night before the crowning. I have been predicting that Bianca del Rio would take the crown since episode 3. I still agree with that prediction. However, I was convinced that Joslyn Fox would win Miss Congeniality since episode 5. While I think she deserves it and has campaigned well for the title, I predict that BenDeLaCreme will get Miss Congeniality since she has almost twice as many Twitter followers (28,000) as Joslyn (15,100), has been in 4th place since the Snatch Game, and because RuPaul opened up the voting right after DeLa’s elimination. I could be wrong – people could vote based on who is actually the nicest instead of who is the most popular. (And I do think DeLa is nice, but it’s not her trademark the way it is for Joslyn.)

In the hashtag race, #teambianca is beating #teamadore by a narrow margin. And Courtney Act is not really in the running. The pink bar shows their rankings after episode 12. The fervor appears to be dying down after Episode 13, although I did not run these numbers until Sunday, May 18th. Perhaps people know that Ru has made his decision and their voting has less of an impact.

I was curious to see how this episode would impact queens’ twitter numbers since Ru reminisced about long lost friends such as ViVacious and Kelly Mantle. If you have been reading my blog (Thanks, Chad Michael) then you know that an elimination gives a queen a small spike in Twitter followers and then her growth rate decreases after subsequent episodes, likely due to less screen time. Digging deeper into the numbers, you will see that this episode does not do much to rekindle our love for past contenders. Each queen’s relative increase in followers is paltry compared to other episodes.

The rankings have held fairly steady since episode 9, but there was one change in the rankings after this episode. April Carrion and Gia Gunn are no longer tied for 8th place. April holds 8th place with 100 more followers than G-G-G-Gia.

  • Bianca (4,300) and Adore (3,800) got the most new followers. Courtney Act is doing well (2,200), but is not in the same league as the other two finalists.
  • BenDeLaCreme (1,200), Joslyn Fox (1,000) and Milk (900) are still seeing good growth.
  • The rest of the queens are seeing less than 600 new followers.
  • Laganja has gained the fewest followers this episode (149). I predict that she will have a cult following within a couple of years. That prediction has nothing to do with numbers. Just a gut feeling that Mama Alyssa Edwards will give her some publicity guidance.

  • Bianca del Rio (9%), Adore Delano (8%) and Joslyn Fox (7%) have the highest relative increase in Twitter followers this episode. Normally a 9% increase is fairly unimpressive, but there was nothing new in this episode and a chance of conversion is unlikely.
  • Laganja saw the smallest relative increase in followers (2%).
  • Kelly Mantle and Magnolia Crawford, the first queens to be eliminated, increased followers by 3%.

Episode 12: “Sissy That Walk”

The rankings are unchanged after this week’s episode. Bianca is in the lead. Adore is highly popular and close behind. People don’t care that much about Courtney and Darienne.

This episode continues the story of Bianca and Adore, and I suspect it was edited to make Adore look like a viable contender for the crown. Everybody knows that Bianca is going to win, so they need to give it a sense of competition. It worked. Bianca and Adore each gained more than 6,000 followers. The fans are making their lack of enthusiasm for Courtney loud and clear. Although she is highly talented, nobody is very interested.

RuPaul’s Hashtag Race

I used RiteTag to find out how many tweets per hour the top 3 queens are receiving. The story of hashtags is consistent with the story of the number of fans. #teambianca appears more frequently (139.04 per hour) than #teamadore (128.80 per hour) and #teamcourtney (10.31).

Darienne’s Elimination

Many queens get an elimination spike. This episode’s edits were a lot nicer to Darienne (She was kicked out of her home, Courtney thought she did the best in the challenges, etc.). It didn’t make a difference. Darienne’s best episodes were in the beginning. She saw a 6% increase in followers this episode, which is par for the course. Her biggest spike was after Shade: The Rusical (15%).

Miss Congeniality

Logo TV launched the voting process for Miss Congeniality right after DeLa’s elimination. (Hmmm…) DeLa and Joslyn are all still gaining a hearty number of followers. My gut says that DeLa will get Miss Congeniality since a) people were pissed off about her elimination and b) she has the 4th highest number of fans. Joslyn has campaigned fairly heavily for the title. I wish both of them could win!

And Now, The Numbers…

  • Rankings remain unchanged. Darienne is the 7th most popular queen, behind BenDeLaCreme, Milk, and Joslyn.
  • April Carrion and Gia Gunn have the same number of Twitter followers.

Episode 11: Glitter Ball #whyben

I woke up in the middle of the night after watching episode 11 and felt like someone broke up with me. BenDeLaCreme didn’t make the top three, and many of us were stunned. If you are looking for a fair assessment of the episode in order to justify your anger, read Eric Rezsnyak’s recap in the Rochester City Newspaper. (Read Rezsnyak’s recaps in general. They’re up there with the AV Club recaps.) I’m a biased Seattleite, but seriously. How can you not love this face? RuPaul, I adore you, but what in heaven’s name were you thinking?

By the way, don’t forget to vote for Miss Congeniality.

Now that DeLa is out of the picture, there is less suspense about who the winner will be. Can Courtney, Adore, or Darienne really beat out Bianca del Rio? Yeah. Whatever.

When a queen is eliminated, she tends to get a bump in the relative number of fans. This week, DeLa increased followers by 11%, which is higher than any other queen. 11% is still low compared to her other gains this season (28% after the Rusical episode). In general, I think that people have chosen their favorites and are just waiting for the finale. Bianca still leads the pack. Adore is still doing well. People are losing interest in Courtney Act. Darienne Lake still has the same number of fans as the eliminated (read: forgotten) queens.

And now, the numbers…

  • Bianca del Rio has the most followers (43,300) and the highest increase in followers (3,700).
  • Adore Delano is in 2nd place, both in total number of followers (39,200) and increase in followers (3,500).
  • Courtney Act is in 3rd place, with 36,200 followers, but only 1,500 new followers.
  • BenDeLaCreme is in 4th place, with 24,500 followers, increasing by 2,400 followers since last week.
  • Darienne is still in 7th place. You know, because she has those amazing runway looks.
  • April Carrion and Gia Gunn are tied for 8th place.

And an extra treat…

Seattle’s reaction to DeLa’s elimination.

Episode 10: Drag My Wedding

Although I correctly predicted that Bianca del Rio would be in first place after episode 9, I did not predict that Adore Delano would beat Courtney after episode 10! I guess I’m not the Nate Silver of Drag Race. Courtney Act is now in third place!

Let’s just take a look at the progress of these three queens. During Episodes 1-3, Courtney Act and Adore Delano were kickin’ some serious booty because of their American Idol history. But they remained steady and Bianca almost caught up with Adore by Episode 4.

And then by episode 9, Bianca beat Courtney. And at episode 10, Adore beat Courtney as well. Does this mean this is the top 3? I don’t think so. Episode 11, a fashion episode, is going to challenge the heck out of Adore-able Adore.

There isn’t any big news in the rest of the rankings. Bianca’s growth curve is the shape of Magnolia’s nose. Magnolia is still flat. Milk is still popular. Laganja is still unpopular.

Bianca will win because she can sew. Darienne and Adore will lip sync, and both of them will go home, because Darienne’s looks will be dull and Adore’s looks will be scrappy but trashy-fun. They’re filming the top 3 on May 6th. Double elimination!

Episode 9: Queens of Talk

RuPaul Season 6Episode 9 Rankings
Rankings: Episodes 2-9

In the Queens of Talk, our shining stars were Courtney Act and BenDeLaCreme, with the other queens struggling to succeed in this challenge. Trinity delivered the most graceful farewell of any queen ever, and Miss Joslyn surprised us with her awkward interview. Annnnd we got a peek into Bianca del Rio’s weak spot: listening.

What did this do to their Twitter rankings? There was a lot of movement this episode.

  • As I predicted, Bianca del Rio is now in 1st place, knocking Courtney Act into spot #2.
  • Joslyn Fox is now #6, pushing Darienne Lake down to #7.
  • Trinity Bonet continues to move up in the rankings to #10, politely sending Laganja Estranga into the #11 spot.

Trinity Bonet’s fan growth on Twitter is especially interesting. Her attitude shift and support for the other queens make her a strong contender for Miss Congeniality. I am curious to see how her popularity continues to grow now that she has sashayed away.

Darienne Lake has been acquiring the same number of new followers as Gia, April, and Laganja. Not exactly Miss Popularity, but I guess she didn’t come here to make friends.

Polynomial vs Linear Growth

Take a moment to look at the type of growth each queen is seeing. A quick eyeball of the graph shows that some queens are experiencing polynomial growth (nice curves!) in their fan base while others are simply seeing linear growth. Our friends in the polynomial category are also the ones who have the stronger story arcs in the show: Bianca del Rio, Adore Delano, BenDeLaCreme, Joslyn Fox, and Trinity Bonet.

And holy moly, Bianca del Rio. She started off with the same number of fans as Milk and BenDeLaCreme, and has grown her Twitter fan base four-fold.

Episodes 7-8: Glamazonia and Queens of Comedy

I predict that Bianca del Rio will be in the #1 spot after this week’s episode. She currently trails behind Courtney Act by 600 Twitter followers, having gained 22,000 followers since episode 2. By comparison Courtney Act has gained 11,000 new followers in the same span of time.

Each episode, Miss Bianca “Tough Love” del Rio has gained more Twitter followers and a higher percentage of her existing followers than any other queen. America’s Next Drag Superstar? If the fans have a say in this.

These two episodes made Bianca shine. She helped Trinity get out of her shell and then killed it in the Queens of Comedy episode. She gained 7,300 new followers (a record!) which is a 31% increase in followers. If you’re looking for yet another reason to love Bianca del Rio, I have a nugget for you. Evidently the man who heckled BenDeLaCreme was Dave, Jinkx Monsoon’s veteran in season five. He’s the same guy that Bianca made fun of for wearing horizontal stripes in his third trimester. According to DeLa, we didn’t see sections of the routine in which Bianca annihilated Dave when she took the stage. It was Bianca’s way of saying, “I love you,” to DeLa. Hugs all around, people!

There is a correlation between what happens on the show (Good job, editors!) and the impact on Twitter followers. The last two episodes boosted the rankings for Joslyn Fox and Trinity Bonet, and pushed down eliminated queens Gia Gunn, April Carrion, Vivacious, and Kelly Mantle. If you’re on this show for exposure (ahem, Magnolia Crawford), it behooves you to stick around for the first five episodes. Even Milk, last week’s eliminated queen, is still doing well.

Our darling BenDeLaCreme had a tough couple of episodes. (I attended her hosted screening on Monday night and I just wanted to give her a big hug!) I was curious to see how she was impacted by Ru’s “By the power vested in me by me,” non-elimination. First of all, she gained 2,700 new followers, which is more than she has ever gained in the past. She consistently gains about 17% new followers, except for episode 4 (Shade the Rusical), when she gained 28% new followers. She is still ranked 4th behind Courtney, Bianca and Adore, but Courtney and Adore have the American Idol advantage. I think her performance in episode 9 (as well as Courtney’s) will strongly determine who makes the top 3.

I was also curious to see how these episodes impacted Trinity K. Bonet, our lady who has conquered her inner saboteur. She went from 13th to 11th place in the rankings, ousting Vivacious and Kelly Mantle. She also increased her followers by 25%, trailing slightly behind Joslyn (27%) and Bianca (31%). However, she only gained 1,400 new followers compared to Milk’s 1,900, Joslyn and Milk’s 2,000, and DeLa and Courtney’s 2,700ish. Trinity is certainly doing better, but I’m not convinced the fans love her yet.

Joslyn Fox is still doing well even though she was criticized for her outfits and performance in these episodes. Why? Maybe because she is so effing cute. And as Sharon Needle says:

And now the numbers…

  • Tier 1: The top three are still Courtney Act, Bianca del Rio and Adore Delano. Each queen has approximately 30,000 followers.
  • Tier 2: BenDeLaCreme and Milk are still ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, with approximately 18,000 followers.
  • Tier 3: Darienne, Joslyn, Gia and April all have approximately 9,000 followers. Joslyn has moved up in ranking, from #9 to #7.
  • Tier 4: The other queens have fewer than 8,000 followers. Trinity has moved up from #13 to #11.
  • Tier Magnolia Crawford: Magnolia Crawford (4,363) trails behind Kelly Mantle (6,644) by 2,300 followers. It does suck to be eliminated first.
